PCmover Enterprise Tutorien-Reihe

General PCmover Enterprise Client Overview

Run PCmover Enterprise Client from Network or External Drive

Overview: PCmover can run directly from a network folder location, USB stick, or removable storage device. This helps save time by avoiding the need to install the PCmover Client on each PC locally. This is also beneficial as you can maintain a centrally administered policy file (MasterPoilcy.pol) that will apply to all migrations.

Tutorial: This tutorial is designed to give you a step by step guide on how to install the PCmover Client to the network.

    • 1. Make sure your PC is attached to the external hard drive or network domain where you would like PCmover installed and follow next steps.
    • 2. Double-click on the PCmover Enterprise download (pcmovere_en.exe) file in the folder where the file was saved.
    • 3. Select “run” option if shown on the on-screen prompt.
    • 4. During installation, select “Change” when you reach “Destination Folder” selection screen.
    • 5. Create new folder on network drive or external media location, and select this new folder to install the PCmover application.
    • 6. Confirm your selected destination folder and choose next to complete installation.

NOTE: The user that is performing the migration will need to have Read/Write access to the network share as PCmover will attempt to create a log for each migration.

Pre-Migration Checklist

Overview: Before performing a PC migration with PCmover, we recommend you first review the recommended pre-migration checklist to ensure your transfer will go smoothly.

Tutorial: This tutorial is designed to give you the proper setup needed to avoid any issues related to the migration or transfer process.

Preparing for a PCmover Migration: The operating system on the new PC must be the same as or newer than the operating system on the old PC. The hard drive(s) on the new computer has as much or more disk space as that on the old computer.

PCmover System Requirements: You can use PCmover on Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit.

PCs on Network Domain: New PCs on a network domain should be joined to the domain prior to the migration.

PC Power Settings: Screen savers, hibernation protocols, and power-saving options on both computers should be turned OFF. Both computers need to remain on and completely “awake” during the transfer and must not go into screen saver or sleep/hibernation mode.

Computer Cleanup: Run Scan Disk or a similar disk checking utility, as well as anti-virus and anti-spyware software on the computer.

Disable All Scheduled Tasks/Programs: Disable tasks or programs set to automatically run, as these will likely interfere with a PCmover migration.

Exit All Programs: Exit all programs running on both computers (except PCmover). Turn off system tools such as virus scanners, spyware scanners, firewall software, and desktop search utilities on both PCs.

Updates for Applications: On some occasions, older applications may need an update in order to run on a newer operating system. All Microsoft high-priority updates should be applied to the new PC before migration.

Hard Drive Backup: Laplink recommends you back up your hard drive prior to the Windows 7 upgrade with a backup utility, such as Laplink DiskImage: http://wp-laplink/diskimage.

PCmover Installation: Install PCmover on both the new and old PC. You can also run PCmover if it has been installed on a USB or other media.

Internet Access: The old PC (source) will need to be connected to the Internet in order to validate the serial number. If the old PC is not connect to the internet click “No Internet Access” and follow the on-screen instructions. If an Internet connection is not available to you on either PC, please call your Corporate Sales representative.

Internet Explorer: The new PC should have the same or newer version of Internet Explorer as that installed on the old PC.

License Validation: You will need to validate the PCmover serial number that was issued to you on the OLD PC (Source) in order to perform a “Full migration”. This step will be done once PCmover is setup on the new PC.

Reinstalling Certain Applications: System tools and music-sharing applications are unlikely to be migrated correctly to the upgraded PC. Laplink recommends that you have backup copies of these applications and reinstall them on Windows 7 once you have completed the upgrade.

Administrator Level Permissions: On some operating systems, you will need Administrator-level permissions to do a migration.

Application Compatibility: Not all applications are compatible with newer operating systems. Please check with the applications’ manufacturer(s) for compatibility before migrating to a new operating system.

Application Versions: With the exception of Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer, all migrating programs that are on both PCs should either be the same version on both PCs, or they should not be migrated at all.

Saving a Master Policy File

Click here to view the video.

Overview: Implementing changes to a PCmover Enterprise Policy is fairly simple. Once you’ve been able to set your policy modifications, you can implement these changes instantly by saving the policy file to the PCmover Enterprise Client Directory.

Tutorial: This tutorial is designed to show you where the MasterPolicy.pol file should be saved after making changes to your policy.

  • 1. Navigate to the File Menu and Select Save.
  • 2. Under the Save Dialogue box, navigate to the PCmover Enterprise Client.
  • 3. Locate the previous MasterPolicy.pol file and select save.
  • 4. This will overwrite the policies from the previous version, so be careful when saving or updating policy files.

Creating an Application Filter

Click here to view the video.

Overview: Many times desktop administrators will want to filter an application(s) from transferring to the target PC. As an example, you may not want to transfer any applications that are pre-installed on the base image of the new PC. This enables you to transfer the non-standard applications only.

Tutorial: This tutorial is designed to show you how to create an application filter list.

  • 1. Open the PCmover Enterprise Policy Manager and navigate to the policy file you wish to modify (default policy file is MasterPoilcy.pol).
  • 2. Select the “Application” tab and select the “Add” button.
  • 3. Choose from one of three filter options – Application ID, Application Name, or Publisher (i.e. Microsoft).
The application name can include the “*” wildcard character.
Application ID is specific to application versions.
  • 4. Set the Migrate drop down option to “No” to automatically deselect it from the application list.
  • 5. Set the “Allow Users to Modify” to “No” so the end user or technician can not transfer it by mistake.
  • 6. Go to File -> Save to update your policy file.

* Setting Interactive to “No” will hide this step from the user.

Creating a Directory Filter

Click here to view the video.

Overview: The PCmover Client will normally transfer all files in all folders (except temporary folders) from the old PC to the corresponding location on the new PC. However, PCmover will never overwrite any files that are already on the target PC. The Directory Filter screen allows the user to choose certain directories that should not migrate.

Tutorial: This tutorial is designed to provide you with a step by step guide to filter directory paths from transferring to the new PC.

  • 1. Open the PCmover Enterprise Policy Manager and navigate to the policy file you wish to modify (default policy file is MasterPoilcy.pol).
  • 2. Select the “Directory Filter” tab.
  • 3. Choose the “Add” button and enter the location or path that you do not want migrated to the target PC.
  • 4. Choose whether you want the PCmover user to modify this filter and whether or not it should transfer to the new PC.
  • 5. Go to File -> Save to update your policy file.

* Setting Interactive to “No” will hide this step from the user.

Pre-define User Mapping

Click here to view the video.

Overview: Sometimes a PC will have multiple users that will need to be transferred to the new PC. The Policy Manager will allow you to customize the User Mapping step of the PCmover Client, giving you greater flexibility in defining how your user accounts get transferred.

Tutorial: This tutorial is designed to show you how to customize the User Mapping selection list.

  • 1. Open the PCmover Enterprise Policy Manager and navigate to the policy file you wish to modify (default policy file is MasterPoilcy.pol).
  • 2. Select the “User Map” tab.
  • 3. Review the seven filter options available:
    • 1. Allow User Creation: Yes or No
    • 2. Transfer Current User Only: Yes or No
    • 3. Transfer User Profiles Only: Yes or No (If set to yes, PCmover will exclude all applications and data from transferring)
    • 4. Current User to Current User: Yes or No
    • 5. Only Users with Profiles: Yes or No
    • 6. Transfer Only Regular Users: Yes or No
  • 4. Logon Days: 0 to 999 (Will transfer users based on last login date)
  • 5. Once you’ve set your default User Map filter options, you can customize specific User Map scenarios by clicking the “Add” button.
  • 6. Choose the Source to Target User and select whether the specified user should migrate or can be modified.
  • 7. Go to File -> Save to update your policy file.

* Setting Interactive to “No” will hide this step from the user.

Configuring a policy for a File Based migration

Click here to view the video.

Overview: Some migration scenarios will require you to run a transfer even when you don’t have a way to directly connect the two PCs. In these scenarios, PCmover allows you to run a migration and save it as a file to a specified location. That file can then be uploaded to the new PC when ready or convenient.

Tutorial: This tutorial is designed to show how to modify a policy file so it can automatically save the PCmover migration to a predetermined folder location on your network.

  • 1. Open the PCmover Enterprise Policy Manager and navigate to the policy file you wish to modify (default policy file is MasterPoilcy.pol).
  • 2. Select the “Connections” tab.
  • 3. Next to the “Enable Storage Device Transfer”, select the “Configure” button.
  • 4. Under the “Van” field, enter the relative or absolute location for the directory with which you wish to save the PCmover Moving Van files (i.e. – \\network\PCmoverFolder\%USERNAME%.pcv)
    • 1. Environment variables are supported in file naming convention – %USERNAME% or %COMPUTERNAME% – but make sure to add .pcv as this is the PCmover File Type.
    • 2. Use Snapshot and Snapshot – These options are available if you wish to provide PCmover with a snapshot of the new PC.
    • 3. This can help create a smaller file size so no duplicate files or applications are saved from the old PC.
  • 5. Span Size and Span Notify – These options allow you to define how big PCmover should save incremental files and whether you should be notified. This option is good for burning CD/DVD to make the transfer.
  • 6. Go to File -> Save to update your policy file.

* Setting Interactive to “No” will hide this step from the user.

Hiding the User Interface, Messages and other elements

Click here to view the video.

Overview: Sometimes desktop support personnel who frequently use PCmover will want to automate the PCmover Client as much as possible, keeping the number of clicks and interactions to a minimum. Policy Manager gives administrators the ability to hide these non-essential screens during the PCmover migration process.

Tutorial: This tutorial was designed to show administrators how to hide different parts of the PCmover client wizard interface.

  • 1. Open the PCmover Enterprise Policy Manager and navigate to the policy file you wish to modify (default policy file is MasterPoilcy.pol).
  • 2. Select the “Miscellaneous Settings” tab.
  • 3. Deselect the User Interface elements you wish to hide.
    • 1. Display UI – Specifies whether the user interface should be displayed at all. If it is not, all settings must be specified in the policy file.
    • 2. Display Warning Page – Specified whether the warning screen that requires the user to check a box is displayed.
    • 3. Display Info Pages – Specified whether intermediate information pages of the PCmover Wizard are displayed.
    • 4. Display Ready Pages – Specifies whether “Ready to Start” is displayed requiring the user to click “Next” on the progress screens.
    • 5. Allow Stop – Controls whether the progress screens allow the user to click the “Stop” button to end the migration process.
    • 6. Transfer Only Regular Users: Yes or No
  • 4. Go to File -> Save to update your policy file.

Setting up email notifications and messages

Click here to view the video.

Overview: Sometimes when a desktop support team is running several PCmover migrations simultaneously, it is helpful to receive an alert notification for when a migration has finished. This helps save time because the user is no longer required to continually check in on a migration or monitor its progress, as they can simply wait for the email notification.

Tutorial: This tutorial is designed to provide an overview on how to setup automatic alert notifications for events related to the PCmover wizard process.

  • 1. Open the PCmover Enterprise Policy Manager and navigate to the policy file you wish to modify (default policy file is MasterPoilcy.pol).
  • 2. Select the “Alerts” tab.
  • 3. Fill out the fields titled Name, Email and Message.
    • 1. Environment Variables can be used in the “Message” field to help identify which migration applies to which email alert.
  • 4. Select the “Add” button
    • 1. Set Interactive – Yes to show the step, No to hide.
    • 2. Select Type to “Done”.
    • 3. Choose the Name, Email and Message as with the header fields.
  • 5. Go to File -> Save to update your policy file.

Enabling auto-generated reports

Click here to view the video.

  • 5. Choose “CSV” for the type of file format you want the report saved under.
  • 6. Select “Add Summary” and define the file name (i.e. – “Summary for %USERNAME% on %COMPUTERNAME%.csv”
  • 7. Select “Add Detail”, then define the report type and file name (i.e. – Applications for %USERNAME% on %COMPUTERNAME%.csv)
    • 1. Repeat steps 1 thru 7 for building other report types.
    • 2. Use Environment Variables to help identify which file applies to each specific migration.
  • 8. Go to File -> Save to update your policy file.
